That's all it is - a safeguard. The club board run the club on a daily basis and make 99.9% of the decisions, which is how it should be. The trust reps comprise 2 of 8 directors so they have an imput but only amount to a quarter of the votes.
If a major issue came up, and it hasn't yet, we'd organise a vote of our 1000 ish adult members and vote how the majority wished at a shareholders meeting. It's as simple as that, and from what I've seen and heard a great many clubs would be happy with that. Except of course for the fact that their own fans don't have any say in what their club does !
From my experience with Supporters Direct, it's turning out that our hybrid of local business people and fans reps on the club board is the ideal model. Accountability, democracy, business skills, and local people who won't be disappearing over the horizon is a good mix. And they're in it for one thing - whatever is best for Lincoln City.
