In November 2006 with the writing on the wall for most, Trevor Brooking did his incisive Grass roots speech. The F A fat cats fresh with their latest pot of gold payed it no more than lip service.
We can blame the millionaires attitude. We can blame the manager. Kevin Keagan could motivate a pub player after a 3 dayer in Amsterdam. Sven has the tactical nous with the pieces to do a chess master. No the state of the pitch went to the grass roots of the problem. Blind greed. For it was blind greed that allowed an American football match two weeks before our nations big day. It was blind greed that allows the top heavy football pyramid, to keep all but the crumbs.
When the FA got the overseas football money they decided to waste the £30 million a year they threw at academies as frivolously as Maundy money. Why do the also rans of the championship get such a nice earner. Already on over a million a year they get another 7 figures. Leagues one, two and the Blue Square got the equivalent of weed killer for our seedling players. That’s almost what becomes inevitable when sides like Lincoln get 68 grand. The snouts at the top end of the Football league trough run by a bunch not dissimilar to the FA ensure that. For a start exclude those who fail yet still get a parachute payment advantage to help them deal with failure. Reward for failure is symptomatic of this country. McLaren gets £2.5million and for big time Charlie directors it is the norm too. Give some of that our way then see what Lincoln can do.
It would of course be too much to cut the rot at the top, especially now they are coming out with such great sound bytes on the Telly. But perhaps the fat cats could at least get out more. I’m sure my view of life would be pretty unrealistic if I was peering through a mountain of fifties. Get down to the park. And wonder at what has gone wrong. Why has so much talent slipped through the net? Why are the kids wearing Carlos Kickaballs name on their shirt?
Why? Well only the accountants, slick suits and mugs that run our national game can answer that. As to whether they have any motivation to sort it is another!
Maybe i'm thick but I just dont get it. How does football being greedy = the English national team is poor? I just don't see the logical link.
