GT (OBE) the Club's Patron says "that's why I think the role of director of football doesn't really work in this country."
Keith Roe's letter (page 51) says "Few clubs with around a £3m turnover contemplate the necessity for a director of football." Very interesting reading, surely they both can't be wrong!! Inexperience of the Board has now cost the Club thousands of pounds in compensation and little chance of success this season. New blood and experience is urgently needed on the Board if we are to move forward and achieve the aspirations of 2010.

I'm sure there's no right or wrong. Northampton had one, Bristol Rovers had one, there may be others that I can't think of right now.

Anyway, it's water under the bridge now: it does not look as though a new DoF will be appointed.

The DoF role worked very well for some time, and people on here had nothing but praise for Deehan. To be fair to them, they tried to help Schofield succeed and backed him. That is important to any manager. It's fair enough to continue grinding a large axe, but there can be no guarantees. Same applies for the next man who comes in. A 'name' guarantees booger all.

That same board saved us thousands in compensation in January 2006 by keeping KA, who got us into the playoffs that year. They didn't look too inexperienced then.

It's in the nature of football that clubs will (unfortunately) have to part company with managers, directors of football etc. occassionally. It'll always cost money.

Redclanger thinks that speaking about oneself in the third person is a little strange.

Be fair to GT. He did say lower league clubs should not become plcs so he does know his football.

Steff Wright did explain the 'Director of Football' title for John Deehan in a recent interview. As I understand his comments they wanted a mentor for John Schoefield, a proven and able football coach trying to make the step up to management. The title of DoF was mainly a convenience and was not intended to be permanent. Where the concept was flawed in my view was that when JD took a back step at the start of the season JS had no Assistant Manager to help out.
There is a school of thought that JS was too nice to the players, bourne out prehaps by the blood and thunder approach to Saturdays match which was a pleasure to watch and got the Co-op stand to their feet for the first time in recent history.
I hope along with many others that JS gets a job quickly and will be able to learn from his experience to bounce back into management. He certainly has age on his side.

I wonder why honestimp would have kept a copy of his letter, and it must have been a very long letter, if it took until page 51 for mr roe to get to his point!

In any form of business we learn from our mistakes. Numerous great Captains of Industry get it wrong. Certainly football is an entertainment, bottom line results only; business to fans. Therefore tolerance has a sharp curve. Despite our position I feel the right man will take us out of it, as a community club.

The D o F was presumably to support one of our own through the first year or so. Sadly history has transpired to prove both Johns were wrong for the job. Error yes. However that does not mean to say the board are wasting money surely? Thousands after all can be a big or small number

Doubtless many who read this board, are interested in reasoned argument for and against your cause sir. And perhaps positives and virtues are much the better partners in your quest, as opposed to going the other chosen route
