But then, don’t listen to me I’m just a mug who pays me money at the gate and takes me chances……

In November 2006 with the writing on the wall for most, Trevor Brooking did his incisive Grass roots speech. The F A fat cats fresh with their latest pot of gold payed it no more than lip service.

We can blame the millionaires attitude. We can blame the manager. Kevin Keagan could motivate a pub player after a 3 dayer in Amsterdam. Sven has the tactical nous with the pieces to do a chess master. No the state of the pitch went to the grass roots of the problem. Blind greed. For it was blind greed that allowed an American football match two weeks before our nations big day. It was blind greed that allows the top heavy football pyramid, to keep all but the crumbs.

When the FA got the overseas football money they decided to waste the £30 million a year they threw at academies as frivolously as Maundy money. Why do the also rans of the championship get such a nice earner. Already on over a million a year they get another 7 figures. Leagues one, two and the Blue Square got the equivalent of weed killer for our seedling players. That’s almost what becomes inevitable when sides like Lincoln get 68 grand. The snouts at the top end of the Football league trough run by a bunch not dissimilar to the FA ensure that. For a start exclude those who fail yet still get a parachute payment advantage to help them deal with failure. Reward for failure is symptomatic of this country. McLaren gets £2.5million and for big time Charlie directors it is the norm too. Give some of that our way then see what Lincoln can do.

It would of course be too much to cut the rot at the top, especially now they are coming out with such great sound bytes on the Telly. But perhaps the fat cats could at least get out more. I’m sure my view of life would be pretty unrealistic if I was peering through a mountain of fifties. Get down to the park. And wonder at what has gone wrong. Why has so much talent slipped through the net? Why are the kids wearing Carlos Kickaballs name on their shirt?

Why? Well only the accountants, slick suits and mugs that run our national game can answer that. As to whether they have any motivation to sort it is another!

An excellent comment which about sums up the state of the game.

The lack of home grown talent playing, particularly in the Premiership, needs to be further addressed.

Too much money to too few teams have made it so corporate that many "supporters" of the Premiership elite have never actually seen their teams play a home game. When someone says they are an Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool etc etc supporter try to make a habit of asking them when they last went to The Emirates, Old Trafford ..........

At a Chesea game last month two ladies on the row in front of me spent the whole game talking, texting and reading magazines. And people still wonder why the atmosphere isn't what it used to be.

Maybe i'm thick but I just dont get it. How does football being greedy = the English national team is poor? I just don't see the logical link.

Can I just point out one tiny little fact. Everyone moans that there are too many players in the Premiership and that's why England aren't successful.

In the early days of the Premiership there were virtually no foreigners and England didn't qualify for World Cup 1994. In the 70s there was maybe 1 or 2 foreigners, England failed to qualify for 2 of the 3 World Cups in the 70s.

If the English players were good enough then they'd be playing, there is no guarantee that if there were no foreign players then the players coming up from the youth set ups would be any good.

Look at our own youth system for example, we've had one decent player recently (Freck) and one half-decent (Hone), but other than that you've got the likes of Ryan and Warlow who will never make the grade.

England are carp whether or not there are foreigners in the Premiership, the fact that there are foreigners means that the FA have an excuse.

Well that's a matter of opinion, however, I'm sure you understand what I'm saying. History has shown England (with the exception of once) always fail to win international tournaments, even in the times when there were NO foreigners whatsoever.

Nathan is right of course. The problem higher up isn't that there are loads of foreigners in the Premier League, the problem is that English players just aren't good enough so clubs have to bring people in from abroad. Italy and Spain have similairly rich, globalised leagues and they run on mainly native talent.

The problem goes way deeper than Arsene Wenger, it's a problem with our footballing culture itself I'd say. An overemphasis on physical size rather than skill, a win at all costs mentality in games for ten year olds, the general dislike of the idea of sport for sports sake.

I could go on.

A lot of this attitude stems parents who will only accept winning though, and from the current crop of live">idols in the Premier League. I work with primary school kids and I do my best to stop the gloating that "We beat you" and the crying from those that lost - but I am swimming against the tide.

Jury's still out for me.

Shows touches of real promise but also some naivity at times. How old is he? I still think our "youngsters" are more just "inexperienced" rather than young.

Frecklington was into his 20's before he was a regular and I don't buy it that this was due to KA holding him back. Our youth system is promising but it needs to be producing players who can be playing and contributing in 20-30 games a season as teenagers in my opinion.

Let's hope Hone is the first of many...

I'm a bigshot, I'm a millionaire
I'm a genius, I got brains to spare
I'm Napoleon, and there's a world out there
I could be ruling

Agreed, thought he had good opportunities to take his man on today and he decided not to. A few casual balls also let him down, it's up to these players to prove they are good enough else they will find themselves in part time football.

It would be nice if more sport was played in primary and junior schools, the school my kids goes to doesn't even have a football team.

Out of schools Sport at junior level is there for youngsters thanks only to the efforts and energy of peole who give up free time for whatever sport to encourage or organise teams.
Schools don't give that basis anymore the teachers generally if they are interested don't have the time or at Junior level there simply arent many male teachers so no offence to the ladies but football is lightweight in schools.
Who dare let 8 year olds go down to the park unaccompanied, thats if you have a decent playing area around.
No Ball Games signs all over the place.
Only British passport holders need apply for the England job please.

It's all up hill from here !

Its is a numbers game. Our country is large enough to produce enough good players to do well. The big problem is that we do not learn technique and tactics as an integral part of our football upbringing.

Stat for you from the paper today:

Total Premier League TV income for the last deal: £2.7billion
Total grant from the Premier League to the Football League for youth development: £180,000

Astonishing.

Surely having the technically excellent foreigners playing over here, and being a role model for out kids, is a great thing? I would much rather our kids aspire to play like Cesc Fabregas rather than the Carlton Palmers and David Battys my generation had!

Plus whatever Budweiser pay them and any other sponsors. On top of that the clubs have their own sponsors. It makes you sick the amount of money washing around up there and the little that is filtered down to what feeds them. But then again, as an economic theory trickle down was discredited years ago.
