The potential sale figure was £750,000. That included a down payment of £150,000 plus a friendly then add ons after so many Liverpool first team games, and a further payment if Hobbs played for England. The sell on clause is 25% of any profit that Liverpool make. So if they sell to Leicester for £1,150,000 we would get £250,000 as non of the other add ons would have kicked in and Liverpool would have made no further payment. That was what I understood the sale to be. Guess we will have to wait and see if Leicester do sign him.

That may well be what most people have been led to believe, but it is probably not the correct assumption. Wait and see; the starting figure will be £600k and we will get zilch if he is sold for that amount or less. Yet another example of some strange contracts being made.

We've got (another) new manager. Will he be a very good manager? I do hope so.

So we've only received £150,000 or we've received £150,000 of any potential sell-on money?

I'm confused.

Basically, the deal was as I said it. We have had £150k which is 25% of £600k, but we will only receive 25% of any future fee in excess of that initial figure of £600k.

You may not believe me, but you will see...

It's also 10% of 1.5 million.

What's the relevance of £600,000?

The relevant figure is 25%.

We received £150k which is 25% of £600k which is why £600k is relevant.

The 25% becomes relevant when the £600k is discussed otherwise £150k could be a percentage of anything.

Why is it 25% of £600k?

Have I missed something here somewhere along the line?

Peter, it is relevant because £150k was the figure we received and the percentage was 25. It was done as a deal whereby that percentage would be carried forward to any future sale, but only beyond the £600k mark (which is the starting point, as they have already given us 25% of that amount.)

I don't know how to put it any other way.

I do hope you see it now. I know it is a rather odd way of agreeing a sale, but that is how it was.

So what your saying is they gave us £150k, and we only get £25% of any figure of any price over £600k. So we let Liverpool keep £450k?

Yes.

And I suppose that is one way of looking at it (Liverpool keeping £450k) but that probably wasn't the way it was originally delivered to the selling group.

I don't yet know the circumstances surrounding the original discussions, but, on the face of it, yes, it does sound bonkers!

I am pretty sure that Keith Roe was involved with the sale of Hobbs, and I believe that he is a far more shrewd business man than to have allowed such a deal.

Well if it is found to be correct, then I expect thethinker to come on here demanding answers, and that Keith Roe pay the money that we should have had!!

I was involved in the sale of Jack Hobbs. Two offers were made by Premier League Clubs. The Liverpool deal was far more favourable financially to the Club, and was unanimously passed by the Board. In fact the sale brought in approx twice the amount often mention on this board. I have handled numerous sales in league and non-league and the comments made by Posh Imp, GazBlades and Impsforever are only looking for confrontation. If they have any experience with transfers, contracts etc they would understand and should know better than make such coments.

My comment was not aimed at you. The only mention of your name by myself was quite obviously a joke.

I thought it sounded a bit bonkers Keith. Is there any possibility of shedding a bit of light on the subject or is it all subject to commercial confidentiality?

I would still be interested to know the sell-on clause terms, however. The section in bold suggests £320k, but I don't recall anything like that showing up in the accounts.
