When we were kids, were some of our heroes really so good? Here's a thread suggestion for us to maybe find out.

Your starter for ten is....Trevor Meath from the early 1970's. Was he as good as my young eyes thought? Can anyone even remember him?

Warning! This thread may burst your bubble.

I certainly remember him. Average in my opinion.

Played for Lincoln under David Herd (former Man Utd favourite) alongside...

Terry Branston, , Tom Brooks, Rod Fletcher, Alan Gilliver, Jim Grummett, Ray Harford, Roger Holmes, Phil Hubbard, Gordon Hughes, John Kennedy, Nobby Lawton, John McInnaly, George Peden, Alan Pilgrim, David Smith, Bobby Svarc, Bill Taylor, Graham Taylor, Derek Travis, John Ward, John Worsdale

Now there's a list of names!!

We've got (another) new manager. Will he be a very good manager? I do hope so.

I think better than average, but a great list of names Posh. Grummett rampaging: Holmes falling over: Hubbard's direct attacking runs from midfield: Hughes, the only man who could be tripped on the halfway line & land in the box for a penalty: Kennedy the safest pair of hands ever: Peden's thundering penalties: Smith viva Zappata and of course GT - the legend.

Wonder how we will remember Janos in the future?

I remember only too well the day that Roger Holmes broke his leg, following a dreadful challenge just outside the box at the South Park end. He was never the same player again.

He was the Lee Frecklington of his day.

My first hero was George Hannah, and even though I was young and impressionable I'd still argue with anyone who didn't think he was brilliant. And then, since I had goalkeeping aspirations, came Bill Heath.

I've just finished reading a copy of the Sports Echo from 11th December 1976 when Lincoln beat Nuneaton 6-0 in the second round of the FA Cup.

The Imps team that day was Grotier, Guest, Neale, Booth, Ellis, Cooper, Hubbard, Ward, Graham, Smith, Harding Sub Fleming.

7038 fans attended with Ellis (2) Graham (2) Ward and Harding scoring with Hubbard as MOM.

Interestingly Trevor Peake was playing for Nuneaton and Lincoln were currently in 12th place in Div 3

Which is why we went on to sign Peake. Best centre half we ever had...

In my lifetime, best player we ever had...

I'm a bigshot, I'm a millionaire
I'm a genius, I got brains to spare
I'm Napoleon, and there's a world out there
I could be ruling

For certain anyone who had TP as their childhood hero won't have had an unrealistically optimistic view of any central defender since.

I don't think we signed him on the back of that performance Posh. For one we had a different manager and staff when he eventually did sign under Lord Colin Murphy!

Still it doesn't take away from the fact that Captain Peakey was the greatest player of my time watching the Imps. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if I get to see another player in a red & white shirt over the next 30 years who is as good as he was I will be a very lucky man.

Isn't it time he was commemorated in some way at the club. Can we not get him back to the bank for a dinner or a presentation. Its 30 years since he signed isn't it?

True, but that was when he was first noticed and then was watched on a number of subsequent occasions. I used to know one of the scouts around that time.
